Project Overview: External Lift and Ramp Installation
Step‑free access has been seamlessly introduced to the Middle Common Room at University College, Oxford, opening this important shared space to everyone. The MCR is in use daily by both students and visitors and this project added a new external lift — an elegant, lightweight glazed structure with a lead‑clad roof—carefully positioned beside the existing stair to minimise visual impact on the historic Mitchell Building.
Ramps were constructed of reused flagstones and hoggin and the stone retaining walls help the new routes blend naturally into the landscape, while discreet internal upgrades, including a Part M‑compliant WC, complete the accessibility improvements to this historic building. The result is a sensitive, contemporary intervention that enhances inclusivity without compromising heritage.
A clear demonstration of how targeted design can extend the life and usefulness of historic environments. The scheme ensures the MCR can now be enjoyed fully and equitably by the whole college community.
